Shuwen Tay
Piano
Praised for her “beautiful sound” (Arnaldo Cohen) and “wonderful fingerwork” (Lars Vogt), Singaporean pianist Shu Wen Tay enjoys a multi-faceted identity as a musician.
As a solo pianist, she has performed in Europe, Singapore and the United States, in venues including Jordan Hall (Boston, MA), and Victoria Concert Hall (Singapore). She won First Prize (Asia Youth Piano Competition 2016), Dakademy Scholarship Award – Best Performer (Singapore Performers’ Festival and Chamber Music Competition 2018) and most recently qualified as a Semi-Finalist (Madrid International Piano Competition 2023). In a chamber music setting, she has worked closely with members of the Borromeo String Quartet, Cleveland Quartet and the Singapore-based early music ensemble, Red Dot Baroque. Having a keen interest in music outside of the classical canon, Shu Wen regularly gives premieres of contemporary works by composers within Asia, and recently played in concerts by the Boston New Music Initiative.
Shu Wen received her Bachelor’s degree from the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music (YST), National University of Singapore, on a full scholarship and graduated valedictorian, under the tutelage of Albert Tiu. Currently, she is finishing her Master’s degree in piano performance at the New England Conservatory of Music, where she studies with Vivian Weilerstein. She also serves as Teaching Assistant to non-majors and Pianist accompanist at the NEC Preparatory School.
